What is Spin Photography? What’s the Difference Between 360° and 3d Spin

In the world of eCommerce product photography, spin photography has grown considerably in usage and for good reason. Some reports show page engagement goes up dramatically which leads to product sales increasing by as much as 40%!

This article will define spin photography and delve into the differences between 360° spin photography and 3d spin photography.

Spin Photography

Spin photography is a technique that involves capturing a series of images of a product as it rotates. These images are then combined to create a seamless, interactive experience where viewers can rotate the product, examining it from various perspectives.

The purpose of spin photography is to provide a comprehensive and immersive visual representation of a product, allowing potential customers to virtually interact with it as if they were holding it in their hands. By offering a dynamic and interactive viewing experience, spin photography enhances product presentations in eCommerce, advertising, and marketing contexts.

Spin photography serves as a powerful tool for businesses to showcase their products in a more engaging and realistic manner. It enables customers to examine the product's design, features, and details from all angles, helping them make more informed purchasing decisions. This technique has proven to increase customer engagement, reduce return rates, and ultimately drive sales by offering a more interactive and immersive online shopping experience.

The Difference Between 360° Spin and 3d Spin Photography

The same technique for capturing spin images applies to both 360° and 3d product spins. The difference is that with 360° spins, the viewer can spin a product on one single level - they are able to spin it left and right (see example below).

Using 3d product spins, a viewer can spin a product on two or more levels (typically this would be 3 levels).  With 3d product images, a viewer can spin a product left and right, and see the product from above (see example below).

When to Use 360° or 3d Spin Photography

We’ll be going into greater depth about the benefits of spin photography in a later article but for now consider this: What is the real purpose of your eCommerce images? The goal of product photography should be to give your potential customers all of the information they need to make a purchasing decision. If your product images fail to offer valuable information, they serve neither your customers nor your business effectively.

Looking again specifically at 3d spin photography, if a top down view of a product doesn’t give your customer any additional information, it’s best to use 360° spins.
